Nigeria orders teething medicine turned in

LAGOS, Nigeria, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Nigeria has ordered the removal of My Pikin from stores and hospitals after the deaths of 84 children who allegedly used the teething medicine.

The Punch reported Friday that, since officials became aware of the contamination in November, the number of contamination cases reported in hospitals has increased to 111. An official said some batches of the medicine are contaminated with diethylene glycol, which put some children into kidney failure.

Officials have asked the medicine be turned in to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

"The deaths of the children is a great loss to the nation. The federal government sincerely regrets this painful incidence and sympathizes with the nation and the families directly affected," said Health Minister Babatunde Osotimehin.
