ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the United Nations will investigate the 2007 assassination of Pakistan's former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Speaking in Islamabad Wednesday after consulting with Pakistani President Asif Zardari, Bhutto's widower, Ban said a three-member U.N. commission will be created "very soon," the Voice of America reported.
"This is a crime that shocked and offended the world," Ban said. "And I know this is a matter of great importance to the government and people of Pakistan."
Zardari has resisted calls to conduct another Pakistani investigation into his wife's death, instead saying he hoped the independent U.N. commission will finally establish the facts and circumstances of her assassination.
"We believe that the commission's findings will lead to eventually exposing the financiers, the organizers, the sponsors and the conspirators of this terrorist act and bring them to justice," VOA reported him saying.
