Med school official gets prison

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A former official at a Los Angeles medical school was sentenced to more than four years in prison this week for stealing cadavers for commercial sale.

In addition to serving four years and four months behind bars, Henry Reid must repay the UCLA Medical School $500,000, Injuryboard.com reported Saturday. Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe refused to delay Reid's prison sentence to allow him to get medical treatment, saying he should have taken care of his problems after he pleaded guilty in October.

"He needs to get this behind him," Rappe told Reid's lawyer.

Reid was the director of the willed body program at the medical school, dealing with the bodies of those who wanted their remains to be used for science. Prosecutors said he transferred cadavers to Ernest Nelson, a broker whose company supplied bodies and parts to pharmaceutical companies and other businesses needing them.

Nelson, who also faces tax charges, has denied any wrongdoing and is expected to stand trial.
