Analyst: Zimbabwe opposition in disunity

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Reports of growing divisions within the opposition group Movement for Democratic Change are troubling to ordinary Zimbabweans, an analyst says.

African political analyst Glen Mpani told the Voice of America in Washington that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change needs to get its act together and reach a power-sharing agreement with Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe or risk losing its popular support.

Citing conflicting statements coming out of a Southern African Development Community summit this week in South Africa and rumors of a split within the MDC on the best way forward, Mpani told VOA, "The conflicting reports are basically a problem that I think the MDC needs to deal with as a party to say what our position is and what is our take?

"But I think what is very important is that it is disheartening and frustrating for the Zimbabwean who is within the country for them not to know what is really happening. Secondly, one would want to believe that Zimbabweans are not looking for a facade, they are looking for meaningful change," Mpani said.

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Mugabe have so far failed to agree on how to implement a power-sharing agreement reached last year.
