EU official urges Romanian legal reforms

BRUSSELS, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The European Commission needs to see results from an overhaul of Romania's judicial system and fight against corruption, the commission president said Monday.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's comments were made after a meeting with the Romanian president and premier, the EU Observer reported Monday.

"I have urged the new government to turn round the negative trend which is visible over the last six months," Barroso said. "Romania needs to be able to convince the commission and other member states that it can deliver on its commitments that remain from accession."

Although Romania has been a member of the European Union for two years, the country remains under extra supervision by Brussels when it comes to its internal affairs, the newspaper reported.

The European Commission has criticized Romania for not doing enough to tackle corruption problems.
