British plane crashes, two feared dead

RUGELEY, England, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Two people were feared dead Friday after their light plane crashed onto a busy British railway line disrupting thousands of homebound travelers, police said.

The plane, falling beween Rugeley and Stafford, was believed to be a Piper Cherokee registered to a 59-year-old man from Walsall in the West Midlands, the Times of London said.

Investigators said the plane apparently struck overhead power cables and crashed into a field between two branches of the track.

Thousands of passengers, many making their journeys home at the end of the holidays, were delayed.

Around 400 passengers on two Virgin trains were stranded on the tracks without power for more than two hours.
