Chinese woman faces forced abortion

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A human rights group alleges a Chinese mother of two faces a forced abortion this week.

The Uyghur Human Rights Project says Arzigul Tursun, who is 6 months pregnant with her third child, was under guard at a hospital in the Xinjiang region in northwestern China, ABC News reported Monday.

The human rights group says she is being made to have an abortion because Chinese authorities say she may only have two children.

U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., who serves on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, said the Chinese government "is notorious for this barbaric practice."

"I appeal to the Chinese government not to forcibly abort Arzigul," said Smith, who made a personal appeal on her behalf directly to Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong.

The Chinese Embassy could not be reached for comment, ABC News said.
