4 survive; 5 die after fishing boat sinks

JUNEAU, Alaska, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Four of the 11 crewmen of a fishing boat lost for 15 hours were in good condition after being rescued near the Aleutian Islands, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The number of confirmed dead remained at five and two crew members of the commercial fishing vessel Katmai were missing, the Anchorage Daily News reported Thursday.

"The four survivors are reporting that all 11 crewmen were able to get into their survival suits," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Levi Read.

The search area for the 93-foot ship and its remaining crew was between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean about 100 miles west of Adak. The Coast Guard said the boat likely sank early Wednesday, the newspaper said.

The Coast Guard got word of Katmai's trouble through a distress beacon signal picked up early Wednesday, the newspaper said. The Coast Guard received e-mail from another boat that the Katmai had lost its ability to steer and was taking on water.

Rescue crews who arrived at the scene about 6 a.m. found a partially deflated life raft, a survival suit and emergency lighting equipment.
