NORWICH, England, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A senior British banking executive died after intervening in a Norwich, England, street brawl, officials said.

Frank McGarahan, 45, the chief operating officer of Barclays Wealth, was waiting in line for a taxi Sunday when he was allegedly attacked by a mob of brawlers he had urged to stop fighting, The Times of London reported Tuesday.

Ambulance officials said McGarahan apparently suffered a heart attack after receiving some kind of trauma during the brawl, which was taking place outside a lap-dancing club. Local residents reported the site is notorious for persistent street drinking, the Times said.

The newspaper said McGarahan was in charge of a staff of 7,700 employees at Barclays Wealth, which manages the assets of some of the world's richest people.

McGarahan had traveled to Norwich to attend a family christening Sunday, a Norfolk police spokesman said.
