BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Local, state and federal officials were investigating the case of five men found dead in an apartment in Birmingham, Ala.
Shelby County, Ala., Sheriff Chris Curry, whose office is leading the investigation, said deputies Wednesday found the men in the living area of the apartment with their throats slit, The Birmingham News reported Thursday.
"Something of this magnitude is horrific," he said.
Curry told the News that officials hadn't determined how long the victims had been dead nor discovered a motive. Deputies went to the apartment after a request to check on the welfare of the men.
Other agencies involved in the investigation or assisting at the scene were the FBI, the Alabama Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Marshals Service.
