Mystery shrouds police chief's resignation

VICTORIA, British Columbia, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Canadian police and public officials closed ranks and divulged few details about the resignation of the suspended police chief in Victoria, British Columbia.

Chief Paul Battershill was suspended last October as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called in to investigate unspecified allegations against him, the Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

However, CTV News reported the probe was apparently triggered "by a lawyer's inquiries about his expenses."

Battershill was promoted to chief in June 1999 and was earning $160,000 at the time of his suspension, the Globe said.

The RCMP investigation was completed in April and found "no criminal wrongdoing or financial impropriety" but, for reasons city officials wouldn't disclose, Battershill's resignation was accepted Wednesday.

The Globe said he won't receive a severance package but the city has agreed to pay $15,000 of his legal bills.
