BEIJING, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. Olympic Committee Chairman Peter Ueberroth said Saturday's killing of a U.S. tourist in Beijing has brought "sadness" to Olympic officials.
The head of the U.S. sports organization offered condolences to the family of Todd Bachman, a relative of the U.S. indoor volleyball team coach who was allegedly fatally stabbed by a Chinese man Saturday.
"It is impossible to describe the depth of our sadness and shock in this tragic hour," Ueberroth said. "Our delegation comes to the Games as a family, and when one member of our family suffers a loss, we all grieve with them. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with the Bachman and McCutcheon families."
Authorities have alleged the homicide suspect, who also left Bachman's wife Barbara with serious injuries, committed suicide immediately after the attack by jumping off a Beijing tower.
The incident, which is being investigated by police, occurred during the first full day of competition for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
