Coyote attacks on cats prompt dispute

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 14 (UPI) -- California State University officials and animal rights activists say they are in a dispute about how to stop coyotes from attacking feral cats on campus.

The dispute came to light after at least two coyotes began attacking some of the 100 to 150 feral cats living on the university campus, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

University workers say the campus has been home to hundreds of stray felines since the university was established in 1949.

Some university officials argue the cats should be removed because they are luring coyotes.

Cat lovers dispute the claim that cats are to blame and fear the innocent felines will be killed if they are put into shelters.

Activists who look after the cats say they have been ordered to remove them within 40 days, but they think the coyotes should go instead.
