Oklahoma executes student's killer

MCALESTER, Okla., June 18 (UPI) -- Oklahoma officials executed Terry L. Short by lethal injection, the state's first execution since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the method was constitutional.

Prior to having the three drugs injected into his arm Tuesday, Short cried and told officials, "I have nothing to say," the Tulsa (Okla.) World reported Wednesday.

Short was convicted in 1997 in the first-degree murder of Ken Yamamoto, a Oklahoma City University student who lived in an apartment above Short's former girlfriend's apartment. Short had thrown a homemade bomb at her apartment; the explosion killed Yamamoto, 22, and injured several others.

Short's execution was the 170th at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, Okla. He was the 87th to die by lethal injection, the World said.

Executions nationwide were suspended for several months until the Supreme Court ruled on the constitutionality of lethal injections in April.
