Suspect found in rural Calif. deputy death

DUNNIGAN, Calif., June 16 (UPI) -- A suspect has been arrested after the shooting death of sheriff's deputy in rural California set off a massive manhunt.

Marco Antonio Topete, 35, of Arbuckle, Calif., was arrested as a suspect in the shooting of Tony Diaz, 37, a 10-year veteran of the Yolo County Sheriff's Department. Topete was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon at the time of what was believed to be a driving under the influence traffic stop. A baby found in the suspect's car at the scene was reported safe, KCRA-TV Sacramento reported Monday.

Officers, including the California State Highway Patrol, set up a large perimeter and searched house-to-house overnight in the small community of Dunnigan, Calif. Interstate 5 was blocked off to northbound traffic creating a major traffic backup. Dozens of officers outfitted in combat gear, with night scopes and rifles could be seen in the area, the television report said.
