Mom charged with abandoning son in airport

DALLAS, June 8 (UPI) -- A California mother is facing criminal charges after her 12-year-old son told authorities she disappeared at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, officials said.

Authorities located Jolan Newburg, 46, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Saturday morning at an airport rental car center about 20 hours after went missing while waiting for a connecting flight with her son, Brandon, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported.

Newburg was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for a mental assessment after being interviewed by officers at the airport, an airport news release said.

Officials said she was later charged with abandonment or endangerment of a child and taken to Dallas County Jail, where she was held on $1,500 bond.

The boy was in custody of Child Protective Services, authorities said.

"The last we knew they were going to try to reunite him with members of the family in California," airport spokesman David Magana told The Dallas Morning News.
