PRINCETON, N.J., June 2 (UPI) -- Most Democrats and independents, and nearly half of Republicans, think it would be good for the United States to meet with its enemies, a Gallup poll indicates.
Overall, 67 percent of those polled favored such diplomacy, the Gallup Panel study released Monday indicated. The breakdown by stated political preferences was 70 percent of Democrats favored such diplomacy, followed by 70 percent of independent respondents and 48 percent of Republicans.
While separate Gallup surveys showed few Americans view Iran favorably, the latest poll from the Princeton, N.J., national polling company found high public support for presidential-level meetings between the United States and Iran, specifically.
Nearly six in 10 Americans -- 59 percent -- said they thought it would be a good idea for the U.S. president to meet with the Iranian president. The percentage includes 48 percent of Republicans, 58 percent independents and 78 percent Democrats, the poll said.
Results are based on telephone interviews May 19-21 with 1,013 adults. The sampling error is 4 percentage points.
