Britain considers cameras to nab litterers

LONDON, April 12 (UPI) -- British lawmakers are considering the use of surveillance cameras to crack down on littering motorists, a newspaper said.

City officials may be able to nab litter bugs with footage captured on police surveillance cameras, or even use footage captured by local residents on their cell phones, The Times of London reported.

London officials reportedly will test the video policing program this summer, allowing authorities to mail citations to motorists spied littering.

The new plan is being introduced as the Campaign to Protect Rural England, led by American author Bill Bryson, pressures residents to back its Stop-the-Drop campaign.

Under the new plan, litterers may be fined nearly $160, but would not receive points on their diving records, The Times reported.
