Poll predicts Mugabe win in Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 28 (UPI) -- Poll results released Friday predict Robert Mugabe will win a sixth term as president of Zimbabwe.

Joseph Kurebwa, a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe, said his survey gives Mugabe 56 to 57 percent of the vote, The New Zimbabwean said. Morgan Tsvangirai, candidate of the Movement for a Democratic Change, was second with 26 percent to 27 percent, while Simba Makoni, a former Mugabe ally, would come in third with 13 percent.

The MDC has warned of widespread fraud in Saturday's vote.

Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since the country won independence. In recent years, the economy has gone into a tailspin with hyperinflation making the currency worthless.

Another poll released two weeks ago puts Tsvangirai first with more than 28 percent of the vote, while Mugabe trailed him with just over 20 percent and Makoni was in single digits. Thirty percent of those surveyed for the Mass Public Opinion Institute poll were still undecided.
