Jail guard guilty on child porn charges

TORONTO, March 28 (UPI) -- A 28-year-old former Toronto jail guard has pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of child pornography in an international prosecution, police said.

An agreed statement of facts between prosecutors and defense lawyers for Matthew Hughes said in 2006 he engaged in sex chats urging children and infants be abused for viewing online, the Toronto Star reported.

Hughes is to be sentenced June 23 on the charges, which have a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, lawyers said.

He was arrested Dec. 1 when a California woman told police she had seen him assaulting a young girl in real time online but police later learned it wasn't Hughes but a video he acquired from another child porn enthusiast.

Detective Warren Bulmer told reporters after reviewing 45,000 chats from Hughes' computer hard drive, 34 child porn suspects in the United States were identified. He said most have since been convicted of various child sex crimes and sentenced in jail, the newspaper said.
