More neglected horses found in Alberta

CALGARY, Alberta, March 19 (UPI) -- Neglected and starving horses found on a ranch in Alberta, Canada, were being cared for Wednesday, the second such incident in a month, animal officials said.

Reports emerged of the weekend discovery by the Alberta Animal Crew Society on the Sunchild Reservation, 140 miles northwest of Calgary, the Calgary Herald reported.

Rescuers found eight emaciated horses with no food and only frozen water in a very small pasture, along with several dead horses frozen to the ground, the newspaper said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police oversaw the removal of the horses, now under veterinary-supervised care with the Bear Valley Rescue group.

The carcasses of 27 dead horses were found on another farm 65 miles east of Edmonton Feb. 26. Rescuers seized 100 horses, 40 rabbits, 13 chickens, seven sheep and five goats, although three horses died after being rescued, the Herald said.

No charges have been filed in the most recent case but two men were charged in connection with the first one, police said.
