Democrats press N. Korea on nuke deal

WASHINGTON, March 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Democratic leaders have launched their own effort to persuade North Korea to make a deal with the Bush administration on its nuclear program.

Former U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry delivered a message to that effect to officials in Pyongyang during a visit last month, The Washington Times said Wednesday.

"The various Democrats they have talked to have made very clear to them that the Democrats want them to strike a deal with this administration," Christopher Hill, the head U.S. negotiator with North Korea, told editors and reporters at the Times.

The newspaper said the Democrats don't want the nuclear issue hanging around after the November presidential election and cautioned North Korea not to expect to get a better deal from a Democratic administration.
