Canadian's Thai pedophile trial delayed

BANGKOK, March 10 (UPI) -- A Thai judge in Bangkok postponed a Canadian man's trial on pedophilia charges Monday after he claimed innocence and said he had no lawyer.

The judge deferred the trial of Christopher Neil, 32, until June 2 and said Neil would be assigned a public defender, the Thai News Agency reported.

Neil was arrested in October and charged with child abduction and molestation based on photographs from the Internet, which German Interpol investigators unscrambled to reveal his identity, the Bangkok Post reported.

Police said the photos were apparently taken in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, CTV News reported.

The main charges against Neil involve the alleged luring and detention of 9- and 14-year-old Thai brothers in Thailand's northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, TNA said.

The maximum sentence for the most severe charge is 20 years, CTV said.
