Obama camp criticizes Clinton for photo

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama's campaign accused Hillary Clinton's camp Monday of "fear-mongering" by touting a picture of Obama in African garb.

The photograph was taken when Obama visited Kenya in 2006, and portrays the Illinois senator wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, Kenya, The Politico reported.

The Drudge Report posted the photograph on its Web site Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers." The report quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide to the New York senator.

"On the very day that Sen. Clinton is giving a speech about restoring respect for America in the world, her campaign has engaged in the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election," said Obama campaign manager David Plouffe.

Clinton's campaign manager, Maggie Williams, dismissed the Obama camp's charges.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely."
