DILI, Timor-Leste, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was under a state of emergency Tuesday following the apparent coup attempt that left President Jose Ramos-Horta wounded.
Interim President Vicente Guterres issued the emergency order Monday night and it was announced Tuesday morning, Kyodo reported.
Ramos-Horta was shot in the stomach and chest at his Dili-area home Monday. He was listed in serious condition at a hospital in Darwin, Australia, but was expected to make a full recovery, the Japanese news service reported.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao suffered a hand wound when his motorcade also was attacked by the rebels. Gusmao called the rebels ''cowardly'' but said ''the situation is under control.''
Rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was killed during the attack on the East Timor president. The dual attacks on Ramos-Horta and Gusmao allegedly were related to disenchantment dating to 2006 when 600 soldiers led by Reinado were fired by then-Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, Kyodo reported.
