Kosovo ready to declare independence

BRUSSELS, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The prime minister of Kosovo predicted Thursday that the region will declare independence from Serbia in a few days.

Hashim Thaci told reporters in Brussels, where he had been meeting with Javier Solana, the top diplomat of the European Union that independence is "an issue of days," the BBC reported.

"There are some procedures we need to respect and some consultations," Thaci said.

The European Union has asked Kosovo to delay on independence until a force of 1,800 people, now being trained to replace U.N. personnel in police and judicial duties, is ready. The E.U. group would work with NATO peacekeepers.

The second round of the Serbian presidential election is to be held next month. E.U. states appear to want Kosovo to wait until after the election is over.
