Zimbabwe on Commonwealth's back burner

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe, which dropped out of the Commonwealth of Nations four years ago, is likely to get little attention at the organization's summit in Uganda.

Anti-government groups from Zimbabwe told Voice of America that leaders are more concerned at the moment with Pakistan. Don McKinnon, the outgoing secretary of the Commonwealth, reportedly told Zimbabwean activists the organization cannot get involved in the country's internal affairs.

South African President Thabo Mbeki stopped in Zimbabwe for discussions with President Robert Mugabe on his way to Kampala. Mbeki reported to Commonwealth leaders that he appears to be making progress in efforts to mediate between Mugabe and the largest opposition group, the Movement for Democratic Change, The Times of London said.

Mugabe, who called the Commonwealth "an evil organization," dropped out in 2003 after Zimbabwe was suspended.
