Uninsured Brit drivers face new penalties

LONDON, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- The British government plans a new move to get uninsured drivers off the road -- seizing their cars as soon as the insurance lapses.

The tactic will be possible starting in April 2009, when the government is scheduled to get the authority, The Telegraph reported. Drivers would first get a warning letter if they let their policy expire and the vehicle would then be confiscated unless they have notified motor vehicle officials it has been taken off the road.

More than 100,000 uninsured cars a year are already seized from drivers who have used them on the roads and highways. Most are caught by roadside cameras.

But authorities estimate more than 5 percent of the drivers in the country -- about 2 million people -- are not insured. The insurance industry says paying for damage done by the uninsured adds more than $60 to law-abiding drivers' premiums.
