Bush to SoCal: 'We will not forget'

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- President George W. Bush Saturday told Southern California "we will not forget you," as the region struggles to recover from devastating wildfires.

In his weekly radio address, the president talked about his trip to California Thursday for a firsthand look at fire damage and recovery efforts.

"And I made a pledge to the people of California on behalf of all Americans," Bush said. "We will help you put out the fires, get through the crisis and rebuild your lives."

Bush praised state and local authorities, crediting them with being well prepared and for responding "quickly and effectively" to the emergency.

"Officials warned those in danger, moved residents out of the path of the flames, and set up dozens of shelters for thousands of people," he said.

The president said state officials reached out to the federal government for help and the federal government responded immediately.

"I went to Southern California with a message: We want you to know the country cares for you," said Bush. "We're concerned about you, your neighborhoods and your homes. Things may look dismal now, but there is a better day ahead. And we will not forget you in Washington."
