Kosovo Albanians, Serbs to meet again

VIENNA, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Ethnic-Albanians and Serbs had a third round of direct talks on the status of Serbia’s Kosovo province Monday and only agreed to meet again.

The one-day, face-to-face talks in Austria, being conducted with help from envoys of the European Union, Russia and the United States, ended without a breakthrough, except that the two sides agreed to have a meeting Nov. 5 in Vienna, the Serbian B92 radio reported.

An announcement form the envoys said Serbia and Kosovo Albanian leaders confirmed they would refrain from any statement or activity that might endanger security and stability of the region or the ongoing talks.

The troika of envoys said its mandate is to end Dec. 10, when they are to work out a report for the U.N. secretary-general.

Kosovo has been under a U.N. administration since 1999, when NATO troops were deployed in the predominantly ethnic-Albanian province to contain ethnic conflicts.

Kosovo Albanian leaders insist on independence from Serbia, while the government in Belgrade said Kosovo will always be integral part of Serbia.
