Fla. trailer park haven for sex offenders

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- An adults-only trailer park in St. Petersburg has become a refuge for Florida rapists and child molesters who have served their prison time, a report says.

Almost half of the 200 residents in the Palace Mobile Home Park are released sex offenders, banned from living near children or any place they might congregate, like schools and parks, CNN said.

"In here, it's our own little piece of paradise," a man named Michael told CNN. "We're safe here."

Nancy Morais, the park manager, who says she was molested as a child, is the person responsible for the influx. She offers therapy and other services in addition to a place to live.

She says that she is protecting others from being victimized by helping sex offenders.

"Put him on the right track, and we have a better chance of seeing society be a little bit safer with this person," she said. "Can I guarantee they're all gonna be good? Of course not."

Some of the other residents object, saying they were not told in advance of Morais' plans. But Teresa Atkins said she feels safe there because the sex offenders want to avoid a return to prison.
