Poland seeks more say in EU voting rights

PARIS, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Polish President Lech Kaczynski Monday began talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a bid for increased EU voting rights, a report said.

Later this week, Kaczynski is to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss a revised treaty for the European Union, which is due to receive final approval from EU leaders Oct. 18 in Lisbon, The Independent (Britain) said.

The Kaczynski twins, Lech as president and Jaroslaw as prime minister, have voiced opposition, alleging the treaty text worked out by Portugal, which currently holds EU presidency, is missing some significant details adopted at the bloc’s summit in June.

Poland is against the old system of EU voting based on a country’s size, complaining it grants Germany too much power as the most populous country in the bloc.

The Kaczynskis have threatened Poland will use a veto to any EU deal if its voting rights are reduced.
