Lawyer hired in Phoenix airport death

PHOENIX, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A prominent Phoenix lawyer has been hired to represent the family of a woman who died in police custody after a disturbance at the city’s airport.

Attorney Michael Manning will lead a team of experts that will investigate the death of Carol Gotbaum on behalf of her politically connected New York family.

The Arizona Republic Tuesday said Manning recently successfully sued on behalf of three inmates who died while under restraint at the Maricopa County jail. Manning maintains anytime a person is handcuffed, the resulting awkward position of the body can put strains on the respiratory system.

Phoenix police and the Maricopa County medical examiner have yet to determine a cause of death for Gotbaum.

The 45-year-old New Yorker was on her way to an alcohol rehab center in Tucson last week but missed her connection in Phoenix and allegedly became so irate police were called.
