Toddler killed by rottweiler in Detroit

DETROIT, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A 120-pound rottweiler dog mauled and killed a 4-month-old girl at a teenagers party in Detroit.

Police said the child, who was identified as Lylie Cox, was with her 17-year-old mother and her mother's 17-year-old female friend when the attack occurred Wednesday, the Detroit News reported Thursday.

The baby's mother left the room to make formula for her daughter and asked her friend to watch the girl. When the friend sat the baby on the living room floor to unfasten the straps of the car seat, the dog "came out of nowhere" and attacked the child, said Warren Police Sgt. Louis Galasso.

"The dog pulled the child from the car seat and shook her violently," Galasso said. "At one point he repositioned his grip on the child and shook her back and forth.

Galasso said the child was taken to St. John Oakland Hospital where she died of massive head trauma.

The dog, named "Chopper," was brought into the Warren Police Department and will be turned over to the Macomb County Animal Control Department.

"Obviously we will request that the dog be destroyed," Galasso added.
