Poland early polls may bring close result

WARSAW, Poland, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Poland's parliament speaker expressed fear Thursday that early parliamentary elections would produce no single party able to form a majority government.

Ludwik Dorn, speaker of the parliament, told Polish Radio a vicious election campaign will bring no clear-cut victory in the Oct. 21 elections and power distribution in the legislative assembly is to resemble the present one installed in 2005 elections.

The ruling conservative Law and Justice party of President Lech Kaczynski and his twin brother Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski is unlikely to win a majority parliamentary seats needed to form a government without coalition parties' support, Dorn said.

The Polish parliament voted to dissolve itself last week and called general elections two years ahead of schedule. The Law and Justice-led coalition collapsed in August over political disagreements and corruption allegations.

The liberal Civic Platform, favoring economic reforms and closer ties with the European Union countries, has been the main opposition party to the Law and Justice and polls indicate the two parties are running neck-and-neck.
