U.S.-Polish missile talks nearing end

WARSAW, Poland, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Polish officials, while agreeing to let Washington deploy a defense missile system, are seeking U.S. protection guarantees against outside threats.

The minority Polish government of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski is confident it will complete talks with U.S. officials on stationing 10 interceptor missiles on Polish soil as part of the anti-missile shield in Eastern Europe in the next weeks, before early parliamentary elections this year, a report on Polish Radio said.

The radio report said Poland is looking for guarantees that that United States would offer whatever is necessary to protect Polish territory if it comes under any threat.

Warsaw and Washington are likely to reach a compromise over deploying the U.S. missile defense system, the radio said.

Washington is to station a radar base in the Czech Republic as part of the missile shield system against possible raids from Iran, North Korea or any other rogue state.

Moscow has been opposing the idea of deploying the anti-missile system in Eastern Europe but all the three countries involved in the project say it isn't aimed against Russia.
