French arrest 4 ETA suspects

CAHORS, France, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- French special forces swept through a house in southern France, arresting four suspected Basque militants and busting up what they said was a bomb factory.

Police said at least two of the three men arrested with one woman were believed to be leading members of the ETA guerrilla organization, EuroNews reported Saturday. The four were armed but surrendered immediately, the news agency reported on its Web site.

Police said a car bomb was being built at the house that was raided -- which occurred near the town of Cahors. The raid resulted from cooperation between French and Spanish intelligence agencies.

One of the suspects, Luis Ignacio Iruretagoiena Lanz, was described by Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba as a top ETA explosives expert. Lanz is suspected in a blast at Madrid's Barajas Airport last December, killing two people, and another near Castellon, Spain, last week.
