Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba (born 28 July 1951) is the current First Deputy Prime Minister within the present Spanish government, led by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). He obtained a doctorate in chemistry at the Complutense University in Madrid, where he went on to become a professor of chemistry. His speciality was reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry. He represented Toledo in Congress from 1993 to 1996, Madrid from 1996 until 2004, Cantabria from 2004 to 2008 and Cádiz since then.

Rubalcaba has served as Interior Minister and party spokesman and is expected to stand in the PSOE leadership contest in Summer 2011.
