Haiti: Ex-rebel leader eludes authorities

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, July 17 (UPI) -- Gunmen reportedly tried to capture a former rebel leader residing in southern Haiti who ran for president last year.

According to witnesses, men who appeared to be foreign law enforcement officers converged on the home of Guy Philippe but did not capture him, Haitian radio stations reported Tuesday.

Some speculated the officers were from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, as Philippe has been rumored to be involved with trafficking in the Caribbean nation.

The 39-year-old rebel leader led the insurrection that prompted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to leave the country in February 2004.

Philippe ran for president and lost in 2006.
