British government may change under new PM

LONDON, June 11 (UPI) -- The Liberal Democratic Party has called on Gordon Brown to move to reform Britain's government when he becomes the prime minister later this month.

Sir Menzies Campbell, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, recently asked Brown to introduce political measures that would limit the Queen's powers once Prime Minster Tony Blair steps down on June 27, The Independent reported Monday.

Campbell said that by limiting the extent of the royal family's powers and allowing Parliament the ability to hold the government accountable for its actions, a better political system could be formed.

"There is an urgent need to re-engage people with the institutions of government which require reform in order to engender popular trust," Campbell said. "The emphasis should be that sovereignty should rest with the people in Parliament, replacing the current concept of sovereignty residing in the Queen in Parliament."

While the Queen has become significantly limited in relation to her Royal Prerogative powers, many still hold that those political powers are kept from the people, the Independent said.
