Portugal names missing girl suspect

LISBON, Portugal, May 15 (UPI) -- Portuguese police said Tuesday a British man working for them as an interpreter is a suspect in the disappearance of a 4-year-old English girl.

Robert Murat, 33, was taken into custody Monday along with a woman and a Portuguese man, a Times of London correspondent reported.

Madeleine McCann was reported missing May 4 from the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, and Murat began working with the police as a translator. He lives with his mother in a villa overlooking the area where the girl was abducted, the report said.

All three people were released in the early hours of Tuesday, and Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa told reporters travel restrictions were imposed on Murat.

He did not indicate if the other man and woman were considered suspects.

A week ago Monday, Lori Campbell, a journalist who works for the Sunday Mirror told police Murat was behaving strangely.

"I found him to be creepy. When he was talking to me he was vague about his background," Campbell said, adding Murat asked a photographer who took his picture to delete the image.

There was no explanation why police took a week to act on Campbell's tip, the Times said.
