Peretz reportedly mulls quitting

JERUSALEM, May 2 (UPI) -- Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz was considering quitting over a report that blamed him and others for the Second Lebanon War, Israel Radio said Wednesday.

Aides to Peretz told Israel Radio Peretz was considering handing in his resignation within the next two days, Haaretz reported.

If Peretz were to resign, that would increase the pressure on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, also named in the interim report from the Winograd Commission, to resign, Haaretz said.

Meanwhile, Avigdor Irzchaky, chairman of the ruling Kadima party, told YNetNews he will resign if Olmert does not.

"The prime minister should resign, and if he does not, then I feel Kadima is finished," Itzchaky told YNetNews.

The Israeli Cabinet planned a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the commission's report. YNetNews said the Cabinet was expected to appoint a ministerial committee headed by Olmert that will monitor how the report's recommendations are implemented.
