Jimmy Carter criticizes Cheney on Iraq

ATLANTA, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter criticized Vice President Dick Cheney's handling of the war in Iraq Sunday and called for more disease research.

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Carter also talked about the politics of Iraq and the 2008 election, sharply criticizing Cheney's approach to the war.

"If you go back and see what Vice President Cheney has said for the last three or four years concerning Iraq, his batting average is abysmally low. He hasn't been right on hardly anything," Carter said.

Carter told anchor George Stephanopoulos about his humanitarian work in Africa, where diseases that have been eradicated in developed countries run rampant. He put particular focus on a disease known as the Guinea worm, which thrives in underdeveloped areas of the world, and which Carter said he hopes can be eradicated within the next three years.

Concerning the 2008 election, Carter said he would support Hilary Clinton and, if he decides to run, former Vice President Al Gore.
