Portugese to vote on abortion

LISBON, Portugal, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Voters in Portugal are set to decide whether to legalize abortion.

Nearly all abortions are illegal in Portugal. The proposal on Sunday's ballot would legalize abortion during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy in a registered clinic, the BBC reported.

The BBC said after an intense campaign, advocates on both sides of the issue were confident.

Supporters of the change said the existing law penalizes poor women, who can't afford to travel to Spain or go to private clinics for abortions, the BBC reported.
