Prisoners riot in California, 51 hurt

CHINO, Calif., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- California's Chino state prison was locked down Sunday as officials investigated a riot by 1,000 inmates that left 51 prisoners injured.

The Los Angeles Times reported 27 inmates required hospitalization Saturday but no guards were injured and control of the facility was never in question.

Guards used pepper spray and rubber bullets to stop the fighting, which began in one of the military-style barracks where the inmates reside.

The prison has been placed on lockdown and will not admit any more inmates until an investigation into the riot and its cause is complete, the Times reported.

A spokesman said told the Times the prison "was never at risk of being taken over."

Warden Michael Poulos was not available for comment.
