FBI probing N.Y. GOP leader's business

ALBANY, N.Y., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The New York Senate majority leader said his business interests are under investigation by the FBI.

Joseph L. Bruno, R-Brunswick and who will be New York's top Republican when Gov. George Pataki leaves office, would not elaborate on the inquiry, The New York Times said Wednesday. Bruno said he has known about the inquiry since spring but was announcing it because the matter had been leaked to reporters.

The investigation "appears to be related to my outside business interests," Bruno said, adding that he wasn't sure whether his actions as Senate leader were involved. He said he was told that he was not a target of the investigation.

Bruno told the Times he did not believe that the inquiry would affect his official capacity. His consulting business, Capital Business Consultants, which lists the same address as his home in Rensselaer County, N.Y., near the state's capital.

"I am guilty of nothing, so why would it impact my ability to do anything?" he said.

The FBI would not confirm or deny the investigation.
