Odd twists in Utah polygamy hearing

ST. GEORGE, Utah, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A Utah court has heard testimony from a 20-year-old woman who said she was forced into marrying her cousin at the age of 14 by a polygamous sect leader.

The hearing in St. George, in southwestern Utah, is to determine if FLDS sect leader Warren Jeffs should be charged with on two first-degree felony charges of being an accomplice to rape, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported Wednesday.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe IV said Jeffs arranged and conducted the marriage in 2001 in a motel in Caliente, Nev. She said Jeffs repeatedly told her to remain in the marriage even though she told him she was miserable, the report said.

One of Doe's sisters testified the teenager looked like a "body with no soul" in the months after the wedding and "there was never a time she was happy about the marriage, ever."

Utah Fifth District Judge James Shumate said he would rule Dec. 14 whether to order Jeffs to trial, the report said.
