Democrats battle for troop withdrawal

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Democrats, set to take control in January of the U.S. Congress, are stepping up pressure on the Bush administration to change the course in Iraq.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., who is set to take over the Senate Armed Services Committee, told ABC's "This Week" that a phased-out withdrawal is the best move. Levin said U.S. President George Bush "will change course if we can put some bipartisan pressure on him."

Levin, backed by likely 2008 presidential candidate Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Conn., suggested the United States begin a gradual withdrawal program in the next four to six months.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a leading contender his party's nomination for president in 2008, said a withdrawal would lead to more chaos in Iraq.

"I believe that there are a lot of things that we can do to salvage this," he said. "But they all require additional troops."
