Democrats poised for gains Tuesday

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- An analysis says Democrats are poised to regain the U.S. House and possibly the Senate, as well as a majority of governorships.

A Washington Post analysis of competitive races across the country show that in Tuesday's midterm elections, Democrats should pick up more than the 15 House seats needed for a majority.

Winning a majority in the Senate is tougher, with Democrats needing to win six seats, the Post said. The analysis said the Democrats should pick up three seats, but races in Missouri, Tennessee and Virginia are very close.

In statewide races, Democrats are likely take a majority of governorships for the first time in a dozen years, the Post said.

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll showed Democrats having a 6 percentage point advantage, down from 14 two weeks ago, among likely voters surveyed, the Post said. Even with the drop, the Post said the preference was higher than in recent midterm elections.

The party in power normally loses seats in the sixth year of a two-term presidency, Post said. Republican candidates this year faced public opposition to the war in Iraq, and dissatisfaction with President Bush and Congress.
