Chilean president visits torture camp

SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Chilean President Michele Bachelet has returned to the former torture camp where she had been detained during the 1970s, it was reported Sunday.

Bachelet toured the site of Villa Grimaldi, now a park outside of the capital, Santiago, where she and her mother were sent for a few weeks in 1975, during the regime of iron-fisted dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet, El Mercuro newspaper reported.

The Pinochet regime (1973-1990) claimed some 3,000 lives and tortured thousands of Chileans.

Among those killed was the president's father, a former air force general who opposed the Pinochet takeover.
